![]() ![]() "Kill City Blues" is mostly set in a mall in Santa Monica, so we get to read Stark's take on modern consumer culture, all while he battles the forces of good and evil and everything in between. That humor comes into play in "Kill City Blues" as Stark pokes fun at the world around him, the general population who can't see all the dark spirits in their midst. "If you don't have humor along the way, it's just too gruesome for anyone to want to read." It didn't work at all, the character falls out of a cemetery, he goes to a bar, he has a drink and he cuts a guy's head off," Kadrey says. "The very first version of the 'Sandman Slim' book, that no one has ever seen, I wrote straight with no humor. Stark's voice balances the murky world with a wry sense of humor. ![]() The book series is full of violence, demons and gore. In book four ("Devil Said Bang"), he became boss of the underworld. He's a magician and attracts all sorts of chaos and trouble with fallen angels, including Lucifer. ![]() Stark, also known as Sandman Slim, sets up his home base in Los Angeles the cemetery in every book is Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The first book in the series, "Sandman Slim," came out in 2009 the fifth book, "Kill City Blues," was released last month. Kadrey's books revolve around a main character, Jim "Sandman Slim" Stark, who has returned from hell to avenge his girlfriend's murder. ![]() "I realized I couldn't remember who was dead, that's when I started building the bible," Kadrey says. ![]()
